Body Composition - Made Simple
Your body composition refers to the ratio of your fat to muscle mass in your body. This ratio is normally quoted as a body fat percentage and can be measured in several different ways. The skinfold test is a quick, inexpensive, and pretty accurate way of determining your body fat percentage and can easily be performed by a qualified trainer who can also give you information on the body fat norms for your gender, age group and even for your sport of tennis.
Another very easy and increasingly popular way to measure your body fat percentage is to use bio-electrical impedence.
By just inputing some minor details such as height and weight etc you can hold (or stand as is the case with some scales these days) a device and within seconds you can obtain a figure for your body composiion.
But why is it important for improving your performance?Well, the lean tissue (muscle mass) is what drives your body and gives you the ability to perform all your
strength
and
power
tasks.
It should therefore make sense that the lower your body fat percentage and therefore the higher your lean (muscle) tissue, then the stronger, quicker and more powerful you will be around the court.
You will also look better as well!!
Combining resistance training the correct cardiovascular exercise will help you reduce body fat and increase your lean tissue.
Just by looking at the bodies of the modern tennis players will tell you how much more attention they pay to this aspect of their training than they used to!!
