CONFIDENCE
Confidence In Yourself? Confidence in yourself and your own ability is one of the most important things you can have. Self-confidence allows you to go for your shots, as you believe in your own abilities. You are not scared of missing because you also believe you can always put things right. Confidence Levels Your level of self-confident is also important: if they are low, then you will not let yourself go to go for your shots. On the other hand, if you are over-confident, then you can not try hard enough and end up losing. Things That Affect Your Confidence Levels The stuff that really makes the difference are good practised skills, a good knowledge of tennis, good preparation, and good physical conditioning. Goal Setting To Aid Self-Confidence Probably the best way to build self-confidence is
goal setting
. The continual cycle of setting goals and then reaching them helps you build up belief in your own ability. Also because this is a gradual process you are not setting yourself up for surprise failures as you have a good understanding of the level and abilities you are operating at (you are not clouded by ego and therefore false imagery). Imagery & Self Talk As Confidence Aids Imagery is really useful in building self-confidence as long as it is used to imagine achievement of a realistic goal that you are working towards and not something too far-fetched. Self talk (the words you say to yourself) is also very important. If you can keep it positive this will build self belief and you are more likely to play better, whereas if your self talk is negative your belief in yourself will drop and so will your performance.
