Serve And Volley - Control The Net

SERVE AND VOLLEY

With the grass court season upon us, there is one tactic that the Pro players tend to add to their game after weeks on the clay - the serve and volley.

Too many people just think the game is only about the tennis forehand and tennis backhand.

But getting to and controlling the net is vital if you want to get control over your opponent and the match.

How To Practise

I have always found that like most things just doing it (regardless of the result) is the best way to practise it, but if you don't have a partner you can still do some pretty effective stuff.

Here is a great drill I came across to help you do just that.

Just get your hopper or bag of balls and place them in the middle of the service line (as this is about where you would want to make your first check/split step).

Go back to the baseline with a ball and serve.

Move forwards after the serve till you get to the bag/hopper and then perform your check/split before lunging forwards to pick up another ball.

Then repeat.

This works the exact muscles you will use when doing it for real as well as stressing your cardiovascular system and stamina which are called upon big time when continually rushing the net.

You do this on a regular basis and you will find yourself able to perform this tactic in a match on a regular basis with no problem.
