Why Serve-Drills?

Well the serve is the most important shot in the game but how can you develop it into the weapon you need it to become?

If the forehand and backhands are basically just swings of the racket and the volley is a punch/block then what type of action is the serve?

If you can identify thie then getting it better should be easy?

The action itself is a throwing type action so developing your ability to throw will greatly enhance your actual throw - SIMPLE.

Below is a great practise for you and before you think "it's a bit easy" - I can tell you it's a simple but very effective thing that all the Top Players use.

2 THINGS TO HELP YOU KEEP YOUR FORM WHEN SERVING

I was playing in a festive social tournament the other day and I couldn't help but notice that there were 2 big factors that stopped people from serving well (especially in pressure situations) and they were for totally different reasons.

1. They stopped using their legs

Players who were trying to "just get the ball in" made the consistent error of not using their legs in the serve.

This means they ended up only using the upper body (and often mainly the arm) and had very little option but to dump the ball tamely into the net!

2. They collapsed before and on impact

The other big mistake that people made was to try too hard to "cane" the serve and basically rushed their action.

Their tossing arm drops far too quickly and this causes the shoulders to open too quickly quickly and their head to drop.

The inevitable outcome is that the ball ends up in the net.

By keeping their arm up for longer (it would fall naturally anyway) and then bringing the arm across the body (like they were hugging themselves) would have resulted in better balance, power and a ball that would have probably gone over!

The main problem with both of the above faults is that people tend not to realise that they are doing them.

The fact that you now will recognize these two faults will put you ahead of the game as you stand a much better chance of correcting them should they arise!
