Tennis speed is the one of the most important fitness components in terms of playing great tennis.
The top players have the ability to not only run quickly which helps them get around the court and to the ball but they also have the capacity to make high velocity movements which in turn creates high levels of racket head movement and therefore pace and spin.
Don't forget a tennis player is different to a track athlete who looks to reach top velocity around 60 metres and then tries to maintain it.
Tennis players never run that far in a single movement and their velocity needs to be much more multi-directional which is why
agility
and acceleration are also so important as training components.

Perhaps the most overlooked part of any tennis training program is the fact that tennis movement needs to be multi-directional to mimick your on-court movement.
These are factors that some may genetically be blessed with but can also be trained with effective training of the muscles and nervous system.
By using acceleration and footwork drills your ability to get around the court quickly will greatly improve.

Check out this video of a great exercise that is a form of Underspeed Training which gets your muscles forcing you to move faster than normal when the resistance is removed.
The fact remains unchallenged that the faster you can get to a ball, the more time you have to prepare for and execute your shot.
With the right kind of testing and some quality training as a result of those tests you should see some great results.
