There are many things that are up for debate in the sport of tennis, but one thing that definitely not up for debate is the need for a good tennis serve.

Not only is it essential in order to play the game properly (the serve starts avery single point), but if you have an effective serve you then become a difficult person to beat.

Think about it this way, if I have a good first delivery and you can't break me, then I can't lose.

On the other hand if I struggle everytime it's my turn to serve then I really put myself under a lot of pressure.

That is exactly why players like Roger Federer and Pete Sampras were so successful. Their strong serves put them in great positions in their matches and piled the pressure on their opponents to hold serve with the knowledge that one slip up on their behalf often meant the end of the set and possibly the match.

While there are many elements to being succesful at this skill, the number one factor is to develop a great throwing technique.

An effective, yet easy and relaxed throwing style will translate into a fantastic serve that with a bit of practise will mean lots of free & cheap points for you in matches.

Just grab tennis balls and practise throwing them to develop a smooth effective throwing motion!

I have found that by me throwing balls around a lot as a youngster meant that I ended up with a very natural and dependable service motion that took very little thought and very rarely broke down in match situations as the motor skill was so "grooved".

So while there are plenty of variations when it comes to this shot (and I will cover those in more details elsewhere), the basics are simply get a good throwing action going that is smooth and rhythmical so that all you have to do is "just put a racket in your hand!!!."

Then just pick up your racket and use the same action to serve the ball!!
